The word 'hymen' is derived from a Greek signifying a membrane layer as well as the Greek god of wedding where technology calls it a very gentle membrane layer covering the genital starting of a women that may or may not be shed off during the first lovemaking. Since times immemorial many societies accentuate that a women encounters pain when during her first lovemaking as her hymen is broken.
