Susie Hayes - anxiety, insomnia, depression

Great seminar today! Reviewing the notes and have a question about one of the slides.

In the 3per pg download - on pg17. The middle pic of 'pathways of destabilization' ex. sadness lists 1. po, 2. yi, 3. hun. I don't understand...it seems like it should be po, zhi, shen???

It looks like in the other examples that 1. Organ/emotion symptom takes role of mother in engaging the control/support cycles. That slide has the organ as son.

Help me out? Thanks so much!

Thank you for reiterating, Susie. So when considering an emotion/organs independently we viee it to be in the role of son in relation to the support/control cycle and when considering the enemies we view that emotion from the mother role perspective?

Dear Shawna,

Thank you for your question in clarifying the slides. I understand the confusion of why you might think it should be different. Please note that when you are looking at the slide you are questioning, that the discussion is regarding the different pathways that the excess Sadness in someone could take (look at the direction of the arrows) – ie it can attack
1 the organ itself via the Po
2 it’s mother, the Earth/Spleen via the Yi
3 through the Law of Inhibition the Wood/Liver via the Hun

Whereas the subsequent slide shows these pathways from a different angle in looking at the Potential Enemies of each Jing Shen of the Organ, with the example of the Potential Enemies of the Hun (being Anger, Anxiety, and Sadness).

So the confusion is that each of these two slides is demonstrating the 2 different perspectives/angles to look at the information provided from the texts of 1.) the pathways that the emotions can take in harming the organ systems, in this case Sadness and 2.) the potential enemies of each Jing Shen. ( and you are correct in that the three enemies of the Jing Shen Po are sadness, fear, and anxiety)

I hope this makes it more clear for you and thank you so much for your interest in the class!

Susie
