This class will present the physiology and pathology of pregnancy from a classical perspective. Based on the cosmological world view of Han and pre-Han dynasty classics, we will seek to understand the 10 months of gestation as a metaphor for the physiological sequence of life, using the 6 Conformations and 5 Movements as theoretical frameworks. We will explore the nature of normal physiology in pregnancy; where and how the mother’s life cycle intersects the baby’s development, as well as the importance of female Blood and how to nurture mother and baby by nourishing this life giving liquid.
We will then turn our attention to pathology, and to the diagnosis and treatment of common ailments and diseases of pregnancy throughout gestation; for each pathology we will discuss and analyze formulae from the Shang Han Lun, Jin Gui Yao Lue, and Bei Ji Qian Jin Yao Fang. Special attention will be given to rigorous diagnosis and the safe and appropriate use of herbs.
The last part of the class is dedicated to late pregnancy, birth and post-partum. Again we will examine the normal development thereof from a 6 Conformation perspective and how to best support it with classical Chinese medical concepts, before addressing possible problems and their management. Genevieve will draw from her experience at births to give real life clinical advice on what works and what is safe or not. Finally, we will spend some time discussing the importance of post-partum care and how to support lactation with lifestyle, nutrition and classical formulae.
