This class will explore the alchemical foundation of classical Chinese herbal medicine with an emphasis on contemporary clinical application. Core concepts for the course include; understanding formulas through herbal families, application of yin yang theory in herbal prescribing, the importance of clinical differentiation based upon directional principles and the tenets of classical formula construction and modification.

  • Understand the principle of directional differentiation in herbal prescribing
  • Understand the importance of yang qi in supporting the body’s ability to heal itself
  • Understand the concept of herbal alchemy verses single herb actions
  • Understand formulas from an “herb family” based perspective
  • Understand the factors that help to create stability in an herbal formula
  • Understand how to modify formulas and combine patent formulas in a way that honors herbal principles of alchemy and leads to effective clinical results

Heiner Fruehauf

Heiner Fruehauf was born into a German family of medical doctors specializing in natural healing modalities such as homeopathy, herbalism, and hydrotherapy. His great grandfather studied with Sebastian Kneipp, one of the fathers of the European nature cure’s movement. Prof. Fruehauf studied sinology, philosophy, and comparative literature at Tübingen University, Fudan University (Shanghai), Hamburg University, Waseda University (Tokyo), and the University of Chicago, where he earned a doctoral degree from the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations in 1990.
