This course will introduce participants to the foundations of fertility treatment in classical Chinese medicine. On the basis of early Chinese writings from twelve centuries, we will discuss
- medical theories on conception and fetal development
- month-by-month development of the fetus (including illustrations);
- the effects of pregnancy on the mother; and
- optimal nutrition, activities, and other lifestyle-related factors for promoting a healthy pregnancy and fetus.
Although we must bridge a wide gap across time, language, and cultural differences to modern clinical reality, there are many gems to be found with clinical relevance still, such as in the information on the gestational development of the fetus, on what we would now call “holistic” lifestyle advice to prepare both parents’ bodies for creating the healthiest fetus possible, and on providing the fetus with the best nourishment (physical, mental, and spiritual) during pregnancy. Throughout the course, we will consider the larger implications of what “fertility” meant (and might mean again) in a culture advocating the unity and equivalence of the human body with the macrocosm.
