This 6 hour course will provide an in depth look at the physiology and energetics of the immediate postpartum period (birth-6 weeks). Time will be spent discussing the impact of birth and birth complications on the mother, and will provide treatment strategies for supporting her through this often difficult, sometimes traumatic time.

Topics of discussion will include the impact of birth on the immediate postpartum period, including normal physiological birth, birth interventions/ trauma, including Cesarean section and traumatic vaginal delivery. The concept of ‘obstetric violence’ and its impact will be addressed. Interrupted bonding due to neonatal or maternal complications, lactation and breast health issues, postpartum depression, anxiety and psychosis, management of depletion from sleep deprivation and insufficient support will be covered.

Treatment strategies will include herbs (including addressing the controversy of placentophagy and method of preparation), acupuncture (emphasis on the Eight Extraordinary Meridians), nutrition, moxa (mother warming) and lifestyle modifications.

Outline:

Understanding the physiologic transition that occurs in the immediate post partum period and the impact that different birth outcomes can have on this transition, including:

  • The impact of normal physiologic birth
  • The impact of epidural anesthesia
  • The impact of C-section
  • The impact of traumatic vaginal delivery and obstetric violence
  • The impact of a sick baby/ mother baby separation
  • Acupuncture
  • Herbs and nutritional/ lifestyle strategies for addressing the above

 

Lactation

  • Biomedical explanation of the onset and maintenance of milk supply
  • Acupuncture
  • Herbs and nutrition to support adequate milk supply, treatment strategies for lactation pathologies: mastitis, clogged milk ducts, thrush, insufficient production

 

Post partum depression, anxiety and psychosis

  • Common warning signs, possible causes and differentiation of pathologies
  • Treatment strategies for supporting the spirit during this time with herbs, acupuncture, nutrition and counseling, when to refer out.

 

The Sitting Month

  • Traditional approaches to the first 4-6 weeks post partum and how to apply them in modern life
  • Herbs for the evolving post partum mother: week by week formulas for the first month and common pathologies that may arise; Nutrition for the sitting month; Placentophagy: yes or no? Is it Chinese Medicine? What are the benefits and possible drawbacks?; Acupuncture protocols (8 extras) for supporting the post partum mother; Moxa/ “mother warming”

Laura Erlich

Presenter: 

Laura Erlich, LAc, FABORM, has practiced Integrative Chinese Medicine since 2007, in West Los Angeles and Silver Lake, CA. She also maintains a labor support practice, having accompanied hundreds of women through the journey of pregnancy and childbirth as a doula.

Laura is the founder and owner of Mother Nurture Wellness, a clinic dedicated to supporting women through the journey of fertility, the childbearing cycle and all areas of health and wellness. Her areas of specialty include women’s health, fertility enhancement (with or without ART), conscious conception, prenatal and post-partum care, gynecological disorders and menopause. In addition to practicing, Laura is passionate about teaching and writing. She offers continuing education courses on infertility, obstetrics and women’s health to acupuncturists all over the world through Pro D seminars, in person at her clinic, and to the doctoral cohort at Yo San University.
