Acupressure for Labour

A workshop for midwives, doulas and childbirth educators on the traditional Chinese medicine techniques of Moxibustion and Acupressure to facilitate natural birth and postpartum recovery

Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) demonstrates that the traditional Chinese medicine technique of using moxibustion to turn breech babies is safe with a success rate that is greater than using external cephalic version (ECV). Research in nursing journals demonstrates that acupressure is a safe and effective method of providing pain relief in labour.

This is a practice hands on workshop designed to empower practitioners with the confidence to both use these techniques with confidence in their practice and be able to teach support people the practical use of acupressure and Moxibustion.

Debra Betts is an acupuncturist with a nursing background. She has run acupressure courses for midwives in New Zealand for over 10 years and has published articles, booklets and a text book on the use of acupressure and acupuncture use in pregnancy and childbirth.

Pre Labour Techniques

  • Turning breech and posterior babies
  • Birth preparation at term
  • To induce Labour

Labour Techniques
The use Acupressure and press needles for pain relief and problems arising in labour such as:

  • Premature rupture of membranes
  • Cervical lip
  • Posterior position and deflexed heads
  • For women during transition
  • Delayed second stage
  • Retained placenta

Post natal

  • The use of Moxibustion, acupressure and diet to encourage lactation and promote postnatal recovery

Debra Betts

With a background in neonatal intensive care nursing Debra entered into the study of Traditional Chinese Medicine in London, graduating in 1989 from the British College of Acupuncture.

Returning to New Zealand she started a private practice promoting acupuncture for women’s health issues, with a focus on teaching support people acupressure techniques that could be used for pain relief in labour.
