12 Modules consist of the following:

  1. Ovarian Function and Jing Potential Modern Western and Traditional Chinese Approaches
    • Module 1 covers the TCM view of the reproductive system. We will look at the complex manner in which the kidney system of energies governs ovarian function, transit through the fallopian tubes, and the receptive potential of the uterus. The student will learn how jing potential can be maximized to facilitate a better reproductive response. We will utilize both modern western reproductive understandings, and traditional Chinese approaches - acupuncture, herbal preparations, and TCM nutritional therapy to improve reproductive functioning.
  2. HPO Axis Functioning: an Overview of the Energetics of Reproductive Hormones
    • The Big Picture: module 2 will cover the complexities that impact the functioning of the Hypothalamic, Pituitary, Ovarian axis. The course will first focus on the reproductive hormones of each of the systems (GnRH, GnIH, FSH, LH, E2, P4, and AMH) and provide an overview of the energetics of each of the reproductive hormones. The course will provide the ability to utilize the understanding of the energetics of the reproductive hormones to apply a TCM pattern diagnosis and an appropriate acupuncture and herbal therapeutic plan.
  3. Endometriosis & Implantation Issues
    • Module 3 will provide an in-depth look at the issues which impact uterine implantation. Topics will include the receptivity of the endometrium, and which Western pathologic diagnoses negatively impact embryo implantation. When the western pathology is understood, the course will focus on TCM remedial therapies including nutritional supplementation, TCM dietary therapy, acupuncture for dysmenorrhea and endometriosis, and TCM herbal therapy.
  4. Working with Western Reproductive Medicine & IVF
    • Module 4 will take an in-depth look at research substantiating how Chinese medicine can be used in conjunction with assisted reproductive technology to improve in-vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes. This learning module will teach attendees the procedures for a clinical workup in a reproductive medical setting to familiarize them with what their patients go through. We will then go over which acupuncture protocols improve response to medications, and increase follicular growth; and will cover which acupuncture points help with implantation, and how. We will look at the specific physiologic changes which have been documented by Western reproductive medical clinics to improve IVF outcome.
  5. Reproductive Medical Ethics and the Psychology of the Infertility Patient
    • Reproductive medical ethics - Module 6 is approved for 2 PDA for ethics (ET). This module will take an indepth look at the emotional psychology of the typical infertility patient. There has been much evidence that infertility treatments leave the patient with a syndrome similar to post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD.) This course will cover topcs relevant to the field of reproductive medicine such as: guiding the patient through her treatments emotionally, and supporting the shen; not taking advantage of the fragile emotional state of the infertility patient; assessing and helping the patient to determine when treatments are no longer working, when to halt treatments; and how to emotionally go on.
  6. Gynecology (Tian Gui Activation) Using the Reverse Sheng Cycle to Treat Various Reproductive Disorders
    • Module 6 will provide the student with a workable model of activating the Tian Gui via the reverse sheng cycle. This approach differentiates treating endocrine disorders according to the forward sheng cycle; and the gynecological approach of Tian Gui activation using the reverse sheng cycle. When participants understand the functioning of the reverse energetic model (beginning with the spleen, and ending with the kidney; with the lung directing movement,) we will apply treatment plans to address various recalcitrant reproductive disorders such as amenorrhea, and luteinized unruptured follicle syndrome.
  7. Addressing Perimenopausal Fertility and Supporting IVF with Advanced Maternal Age; Heart-kidney Axis
    • Module 7 will cover the nuances of addressing perimenopausal fertility. When working with women over 35, we must address the declining yang ming, and how it impacts the reproductive functioning. We will look at the reproductive differences in ovarian functioning, the GnRH pulsatility of the hypothalamus, its impact on the pituitary gland and the FSH molecule, and how and why the ovary responds in a more delicate manner than younger women. The module will cover how to support older women undergoing IVF with Chinese medicine, utilizing the heart-kidney axis.
  8. Treating Reproductive Autoimmune Issues
    • Reproductive immunology is the discipline of addressing autoimmune issues in the reproductive patient who experiences difficulty with implantation, or suffers repeated miscarriages. Module 8 will cover the reproductive medical pathology and what autoimmune markers of implantation mean. We will then apply a TCM understanding of this pathology to create a TCM treatment plan to reduce autoimmune reactivity and calm the immune system down. We will cover such issues as blood clotting factors, and natural anticoagulant therapeutics with acupuncture, supplements and herbs, as well as identifying and addressing the characteristic makeup of a patient with autoimmune implantation issues.
  9. Addressing Excesses of the Reproductive Years (Nei Jing Su Wen)
    • Module 9 will address the differences between the reproductive system during the time of the Nei Jing, when cycles of seven governed a woman's reproductive cycles; and today's six year cycles. We will study chapter 8 of the Su Wen apply its wisdom to addressing the reproductive excesses common in modern times. The course topics will include hormonal excesses, the impact of frenetic cycling, and how to reduce the reproductive excesses with lifestyle, dietary therapy, acupuncture, and herbal therapy.
  10. Treating Ovarian Cysts & PCOS
    • Module 10 will take an in depth look at the pathology of ovarian cysts, and the multi system involvement in polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS.) The participant will become familiar with laboratory values consistent with cystic ovarian presentations, and how these excesses can be treated with electroacupuncture stimulation, herbs to reduce androgenic activity, and TCM dietary therapy. The course will also cover how to address excess cysts associated with IVF hormonal stimulation, and modern day treatments that differ from addressing cysts due to kidney yang vacuity.
  11. Utilizing The Eight Extraordinary Meridians to Treat Fertility
    • Module 11 will go over each of the eight extraordinary meridians and look at the characteristic issues associated with them. Each carries a particular "theme" that impacts the functioning of the health as a whole, and the reproductive system in particular. The course will go over when to use which system for which disorders; for example, utilizing the dai mai to address PCOS; utilizing the ren mai to address deficiencies in nurturing; and utilizing the wei mai to address social issues pertaining to pregnancy and parenthood. We will cover which hormones pertain to which of the 8 extra vessels, and appropriate treatment strategies to regulate hormonal imbalances.
  12. Supporting the Infertility Through Difficult Times Addressing the Shen
    • Module 12 will take the participants through an in depth self inquiry system utilizing the five-element system to uncover root psychoemotional issues in their own lives. They will then learn to apply the same inquiry process for appropriate patients in their practice. The course will narrow the focus on developing shen based treatments utilizing the five element model to treat specific psychoemotional disturbances.
